Remember all those weeks ago when we started spring training? Hard to believe that was almost 8 weeks ago. Remember the big Boogie kick-offs at the Sandman Hotel? All the great energy (and people). Right away you knew you were in the right spot and this would be a fun 8 weeks together.
As race day draws near, and a bit of anxiety may be creeping in, it’s easy to forget the reason you signed up in the first place. A healthy, vibrant life means keeping things in the FUN Zone. We all know that “FUN” is one of RUNClub’s six core values and Boogie Day is your time to shine, celebrate and (yes) have FUN.
Here’s how to step up to the start line with a smile on your face and ensure you have nothing but fun.
- Singing: Say your name, say your name, say your name
The first step to a guaranteed day of fun is firstly, proudly wearing your red Boogie shirt and secondly, maybe even putting your name on your arms, chest or bib in washable felt tip pen. That way, strangers will be able to personally cheer you on and it will make you feel like a bona fide celebrity. You’ll be glad of the extra support.
- Think fun thoughts
It sounds simple, but it’s true. Having a ‘ time ‘ goal is awesome if that is important to you, and if not, that is okay too. Either way, take the pressure off, and celebrate wonderful you the whole way. The main focus for all of us on Boogie day should always be to have fun! You’ve done your training; all that matters now is finishing with a HUGE smile on your face. So, soul rockers, rock up to the start line with positive thoughts on your mind and remember to have fun.
- Employ your family and friends
Never underestimate the power of a familiar face on race day. Get your mum, uncle, cousin, kids, work colleagues and pals to stand at strategic points along the course and remind them to cheer their heads off. Once you spot them if you feel like stopping for a quick hug, do it.
“Movement” is an emotional business. Seeing a familiar face in the crowd will fill you with joy and those smiles will propel you to keep on running ( and walking) when your legs feel like giving up.
- Ride the wave
For the majority of us running (or power walking) on race day (anywhere) can be an emotional rollercoaster. Sometimes things come up (feelings / emotions) and emotions can be potent. Remember to ride the wave. You will be feeling on top of the world once you cross the finish line with your hands in the air. The ups and downs are all part of the magic of race day. Every race has a unique experience internally. Movement is Change.
- Smile at every chance
It’s a little-known fact that the facial feedback effect of smiling triggers a positive emotional response in your brain that instantly makes you feel good. But more importantly, if you smile like a SOUL ROCKER along the route, you will lift yourself up and everyone around you. Energy is a real deal. Work that Boogie route like it’s the red carpet and you’re a famous rock star. This is your moment to shine. Soul Rockers unite!
It’s a proven fact that wearing fun attire guarantees extra loud cheers on race day. Just watch the crowd’s reaction to a giant flamingo / a squirrel / or even a RED dinosaur (and their friend, Mac) as they amble past. And we all know that extra loud cheers equal speedier legs. Wear something funky with your boogie red shirt and work those crowds. We have one participant, Eric, who wears a suit for every boogie (his Grandfather's). This is so much fun and also very heartwarming (emotional). |
- Engage with the crowd
Crowd support is a two-way process and getting the best out of the public requires more from you than simply running/ walking . To receive the loudest cheers and a much-needed adrenaline boost, throw your arms in the air, give some high-fives, make some noise and watch their reaction. It’s worth playing to your audience if you need a pick-me-up as the noisiest runners are guaranteed the loudest cheers.
- Remember you're VERY SPECIAL
Only a small percentage of humans make the commitment to do what you are doing. This makes YOU very special. You commit to your health, show up and keep putting one foot in front of the other. This makes you pretty darn special. Now is the time to bask in the glow of your success. Have FUN!
Boogie on! Thank you so much for being here during this very fun spring training. It’s been amazing & super FUN!
Boogie is always about living a big, juicy, vibrant and FUN life!
